What is Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI)?

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI) is a type of language interpretation service that allows interpreters to provide real-time interpretation for hybrid or remote events or meetings. In RSI, interpreters work from a remote location, typically through a dedicated platform, to provide interpretation services for events such as conferences, webinars, meetings, or seminars.

Unlike traditional consecutive interpretation, where speakers pause to allow interpreters to interpret their speech, simultaneous interpretation involves rendering the speaker's message in real-time, without interrupting the flow of the event. RSI is particularly useful for international events where participants speak different languages and need to communicate with each other from different locations in real-time.

RSI is enabled by technology, such as video conferencing and specialized interpreting platforms, solid wired internet connection, a proper and updated computer, a professional headset, etc which allow interpreters to work remotely and deliver their interpretation rendition to the participants. With RSI, participants can communicate seamlessly in their native language, without the need for complex logistics, travel, or physical interpretation equipment.
